Hatfield Peverel v Burnham Sports CC 1st XI on Sat 17 Apr 2010 at 1pm
Burnham Sports CC Lost by 33 runs
Match report
Ali Allchin put down an early marker for the months ahead as Burnham Sports began their cricket season with an encouraging display away to Hatfield Peverel.
Allchin, a member of Essex's Under-19 squad, was Burnham's leading wicket-taker in the Mid-Essex first division last summer, but is no one-trick pony and also has huge potential with the bat.
The 18-year-old, who is 6ft 5ins and weighs more than 17st, hit a superb 51 on a damp, slow pitch that was offering the Premier Division champions plenty of assistance.
Allchin hit three towering sixes and six fours before being deceived by a slower ball by Huntindon, who finished with match-winning figures of six for 27. He had thrived after the imposing Richardson had taken the first three Burnham wickets to fall.
"On a personal level, it was a satisfying start to the season," Allchin said. "I'd been disappointed with my bowling earlier in the game, so it was good to make some runs."
Sports, who had been set 175 to win in the 45 over per side game, finished 141 all out, but, given that they were missing a string of regular players and the strength of the opposition, returned home satisfied.
Put into bat, Peverel, who fielded eight of their usual first team, struggled to dictate on a wicket, which, admittedly restricted fluent strokeplay.
Karl Barnes (9-2-28-2) and Andy Stephens (9-4-17-0), in particular, exploited conditions that they would love to pack in their kit bags from week to week, while leg spinner Greg Campion found a lovely flight towards the end of the innings and ended three for 25.
Sayeid Ahmed contributed a wicket and a sharp run out, while Paul Green, who stood in as wicket-keeper, picked up two catches and a stumping.
Allchin was not the only batsman to make his mark, either. Stephens found the boundary six times on his way to 31, before being last man out. Sayeid (17) also spent some valuable time at the crease.
This weekend, Sports complete their pre-season schedule with friendlies away to Great Totham (on Saturday, start 1pm) and Tillingham (Sunday, 2pm).
