Burnham Sports CC 1st XI v Tillingham on Sat 31 Jul 2010 at 1.30pm
Burnham Sports CC Won by 172 runs
Match report
Grant Smith hit a career-best century as ruthless Burnham Sports crushed neighbours Tillingham by 172 runs at Millfields.
Smith hit a superb 133 not out as his team compiled 302 for six from their allotted 45 overs - the biggest tally made at Burnham's big base in living memory.
Sorry Tillingham, rooted to the bottom of the T.Rippon Mid-Essex first division and able to field just nine players, were then dismissed for 130 in one of the most one-sided derby fixtures ever played.
The visiting team boasted a strong bowling line-up but Tom Ford, captaining the side in place of the suspended Jimmy Chapman, was soon regretting his decision to field first.
Smith and Jalal Ahmed set the tone for the day with an opening partnership of 129 inside 22 overs before the latter, having moved menacingly to 57, was run out after rejecting an ambitious single.
Unruffled, Smith, who had scored an undefeated 102 in the reverse fixture, continued dispatching the bowlers to all parts. The sushi-loving right-hander reached three figures with a boundary through the leg side and finished with three sixes and 23 fours to his name.
His stand for the fourth wicket with Paul Green (25) was worth 71, while he and Dominic Whittaker (22) put on 49 in just 26 balls towards the finish.
Tillingham, resigned to relegation for the second successive year, never threatened to get anywhere near Burnham's tally and would have suffered an even more humiliating reverse had George Parlour not made a cautious 64.
Robin Whittaker, who took four for 18, was the pick of the home attack - his victims either being bowled or caught in the slip cauldron. Ali Allchin took two for 23, with spinners Jamie Hamilton and Green chipping in with a wicket each.
