Rayleigh v Burnham Sports CC 1st XI on Sat 15 May 2010 at 1.30pm
Burnham Sports CC Lost by 3 runs
Match report
An inspired late innings by teenager Robin Whittaker was not quite enough as Burnham Sports suffered an agonising three-run defeat away to Rayleigh.
The 18-year-old entered the fray with just five overs left, with his team, chasing 207 to win, teetering on 166 for seven. He proceeded to smash a rapid 31 not out to set up a dramatic final-ball finale but last man Karl Barnes, needing a boundary to snatch the spoils, was unable to make contact.
Whittaker deserved better for his late onslaught, the highlight of which was a six through mid-wicket off the speedy Cook (five for 58) in a penultimate over that yielded 11 runs.
When the last pair took another six runs from the first four balls of the last over, the target had been reduced to five - but Whittaker could only manage a single off next delivery before Barnes swiped and missed.
Earlier, a fluent 61 by Grant Smith, who hit seven fours and a six, had kept Burnham firmly in the hunt but Joel Whittaker (20) and Jamie Hamilton (18) had departed when looking menacing, while Ali Allchin holed out after a typically powerful 39.
Ultimately, Sports were left to rue a few fielding errors and bowling too many four-balls.
Allchin and Andy Stephens (one for 19 from eight overs) combined to concede just 16 runs that from the first 10 overs but, after being restricted, Rayleigh fought back - critically scoring 101 from their final 15 overs.
Barnes claimed two for 41 but Burnham's most productive bowler was Hamilton, who bagged four for 58 with his off-spin. All his victims had their stumps disturbed.
