Jamie Hamilton and Sayeid Ahmed combined to steer the 1st XI to success at Waltham.
The fifth-wicket pair shared an unbroken stand of 118 as their team, chasing 174 to win, eventually eased home with 37 balls to spare.
Such a comfortable success had looked unlikely after they had slipped to 56 for four a third of the way through their innings, but Hamilton, the captain, batted serenely on his way to an unbeaten 70, while Sayeid, having initially settled for an anchor role, grew in confidence and deservedly finished undefeated on 50.
Hamilton, whose innings was punctuated with eight fours and two sixes, said: "It got easier the longer was I was out there and Sayeid batted with great composure. We've made a good start to the season but it's very early days and twe must not get ahead of ourselves."
Earlier, Great Waltham, who had been put into bat, had rallied after being reduced to 26 for three and then 71 for five. Ali Allchin (two for 48) and Robin Whittaker (one for 35) grabbed the early wickets before Andy Stephens (two for 36) and Karl Barnes (two for 37) joined the party.
