Match report
ALLCHIN SHINES AS SPORTS HIT DECK RUNNING
A mixture of youth and experience came to the fore as Burnham Sports got their league campaigns off to a dream start.
The club's 1st XI, inspired by Ali Allchin, beat Bentley by seven wickets in their T.Rippon Mid-Essex Division One encounter at Milfield, while a four-wicket burst by the evergreen Roger Perrin helped the 2nd XI thrash Marconi by nine wickets in their Division Eight opener.
Allchin has started this season from where he left off last and produced an explosive all-round performance that augurs well for the summer months.
The 18-year-old begun by taking three wickets before Bentley had reached double figures and, from then on, the shell-shocked visiting team, who had been put into bat, were always struggling to make a competitive tally.
Andy Stephens (three for 25) replaced Allchin and, after he had taken the next three wickets, Bentley were 79 for six. The left-handed Flack (41 not out) offered some resistance but Robin Whittaker (two for 41) and Allchin returned to starve him of companions.
Bentley were eventually all out for 147, with Allchin's reward for consistently finding a good length and line - on a slow pitch hardly conductive to fast bowling - being five for 28.
In reply, Sports quickly lost their opening batsmen and the clubhouse was beginning to resemble a doctor's waiting room, with Joel Whittaker (ankle) and Rob Layzell (hamstring) needing treatment for injuries.
However, skipper Jamie Hamilton steadied the ship with an innings of 27 before Joel Whittaker (58 not out) and Allchin (47 not out) saw their team home with almost 18 overs to spare. Fittingly, the imposing Allchin finished things off with a straight six.
