Match report It's said that if we could sell our experiences for what they cost us, we'd all be millionaires. True or not, the Over 40s beat the Under 40s by four wickets when Burnham Sports held their annual clash of the generations at Millfield.
The Old Boys were a man short but, between them, still boasted aggregate age of exactly 500. And it was their oldest player, George Rice, who played a starring role in a match played a fine spirit.
Rice, 62, pegged back the Under 40s with an accurate seven-over spell of three for 23. His victims included the prize scalp of Joel Whittaker, trapped leg before wicket.
Chris Rich, 43, also played a starring role, taking three wickets in four balls towards the end of the innings - his final wicket being that of Jamie Hamilton, the 1st XI captain, caught behind for 40.
Robin Whittaker (33) fell to Matt Mears, with Roger Perrin, 61, Dave Gamble, 58, and Brian Leech, 47, also claiming a wicket.
The Under 40s finished with 170 and it seemed that tally might be enough as their evergreen rivals slipped to 90 for five, despite a fluent opening partnership of 42 between Neil Saunders (26) and Rich.
However, Andy Stephens (retired on 43), Gamble and Perrin combined to put on 60 for the sixth wicket before Perrin and Leech secured the winning runs.
