Match report A frustrating weekend for Sports was capped by wet weather seemingly preventing them taking the scalp of Wickford in their Warsop Central Essex Sunday League fixture at the Patmore Memorial ground.
Put into bat, Burnham managed a respectable 183 thanks to solid efforts from Allchin (40), Robin Whittaker (37) and Sayeid Ahmed (33).
Bizzarely, we 'declared' with two balls of the innings left because Mr Gamble (who insisted on batting 11 despite initially being placed higher) was still wearing his jeans/jumper when the ninth wicket fell !!
To be honest, it had looked long odds against Dave being required as we begun the final over. Seamers was out first ball, Stevo Jr succumbed next ball and Stevo Sr, having hit 2 off the hat-trick ball, chipped one up to cover off the next. 3 wickets in 4 balls
Wickford were struggling on 86 for five, with less than 15 overs left, when incessant rain forced the players for a second and final time. Andy Stephens had taken three for 39.
The game had descended into something of a farce. Dave and Stevo Sr bowled off little more than one pace for 10 overs.
Stevo Jr could not see (hair gel was trickling into his eyes) and Seamers was amused by rain dripping off the front of his cap like a tap. We dropped a string of chances and Lomez risked the wrath of his skipper by taking himself off to long on (from cover) without asking/permission !
Tea was superb and we all watched the last hour of the Twenty20 final in the warmth of their clubhouse.
