Burnham Sports CC Sunday XI v Chequers on Sun 23 May 2010 at 2pm
Burnham Sports CC Won by 26 runs
Match report
A scorching day, as testified by the back of my legs, which I neglected to put suntan cream on. Be warned: umpiring for 25 overs from the River End with shorts on can be a dangerous business.
The bulk of the Chequers players came over from Canewdon via ferry (a snip at £3 each way and took between 10 and 15 mins instead of 45 in the car) and clearly it was a calm crossing because they quickly dismissed Wade and Stephens JR before either had troubled the scorer. So much for Stevo Sr's idea of watching the boys bat for the afternoon.
Fuad and Tim did shine for the 15-year-old crew and put together a decent third-wicket stand. Fuad went on to make 50, although it took the best part of 30 overs to accumulate.
Lomez's half-century was made with more urgency before his brothers also added a late flurry of what turned out to be much-needed runs.
We went out to field with 10 (young Bradley Powell had cried off in the morning with a sickness bug) and, after 2 overs, Tim left the field evidently suffering from a similar condition and did not return. He was sick 3 times before leaving the ground and his mum told me later in the evening that it was 'coming out both ends'. A little too much information, there.
Anyway, I digress.
We were struggling to make inroads and then, with still half of their innings left, Fuad said he had to go to do some revision. We were down to 8 players - with 3 Whittakers and 2 Stephens on the field. Thank goodness they had not arranged a joint holiday.
Chequers exploited the vast amounts of unprotected sun-baked ground (Stevo Sr adopted a 4-2 field) and probably returned home lamenting an opportunity missed.
