Tillingham v Burnham Sports CC 1st XI on Sat 23 Jun 2007 at 1.30pm
Match was Abandoned because of rain
Match report
This was that match - the one in which Jimmy Chapman, by his own admission, cheated. We are on a roll going into the game, take two early wickets on a tricky pitch and then Jimmy 'middles' a ball onto his pads off Chickie. Joel, at short leg, takes a superb catch diving to his left. To a man, we all go up - it's one of those where you don't have to appeal; just celebrate. Robbie Dennis, the umpire, raises his finger as Jimmy stands his ground. He won't budge. By now, all 11 of us are in a huddle congratulating Chickie and Joel. Jimmy won't move. Now, our gaze is on Robbie, who is mumbling something about not having given Jimmy out (even though he has!). He's now saying he's not sure if Jimmy hit it. Jimmy, for his part, says he has not. All of us, to a man, are stunned by what we are hearing/seeing. He could not have been more out if we'd knocked his middle stump out of the ground. Predictably, the rest of the contest is sour, tainted and played in a really unpleasant atmosphere. Heavy rain after tea means it is a no-result but we leave convinced that we'd have won had Jimmy, who went on to score 97, had departed when he should have. They'd have been zip all out and we'd have finished the job. The following Wednesday (4 days after the game), a remorseful Jimmy phones up Dave and apologies for not walking. Says he knew he'd hit the ball and that he'd crossed the line by not walking. Adds that he's worried cricket friendships that he's spent decades building have been ruined. Dave accepts his apology and we move on. Our match the following week is then washed out, too, and we lose vital ground in our promotion push. Other teams complete 2 matches.
