Match report There were mixed fortunes for Burnham Sports cricket club as they played their final league fixtures of the season last weekend.
The 1st XI looked in need of the finishing line as they lost by seven wickets away to Broomfield but the 2nds, so often beaten in close finishes this campaign, snatched a dramatic one-run win over Great Burstead. Meanwhile, the Sunday side capped a fine campaign by beating Rayne by 25 runs in the Warsop Central Essex League Division Four but it was not quite enough to secure them the title.
Burnham’s first team have lacked consistency this summer and played poorly against a Broomfield team needing to win to guarantee survival in the T.Rippon Mid-Essex League first division.
Jamie Hamilton, who has done so well in his debut year as skipper, chose to bat after winning the toss but was soon regretting that decision as his team slumped to 39 for five, with left-hander Phil Win claiming four for 21.
Sixteen-year-old Robin Whittaker hit a polished 58 not out to help the visiting team eventually reach 153 for eight from their allotted overs, but that total always looked vulnerable. Neil Saunders (20), Andy Stephens (16) and Brian Leech (15 not out) were the only other batsmen to manage double figures.
Ali Allchin (two for 36) took a couple of wickets in quick succession when Broomfield replied but that merely encouraged Graeme Mason (44 not out) and Sanjay Mishra (74) to enjoy themselves as the home side coasted home with more than 17 overs to spare.
