Tillingham v Burnham Sports CC 1st XI on Sat 16 Aug 2008 at 1.30pm
Burnham Sports CC Lost By 7 Wickets
Match report
Tillingham are already assured the T.Rippon Mid-Essex League first division title and added some icing to their cake by beating neighbours Burnham by seven wickets at Vicarage Lane.
Contests between the two clubs are often feisty occasions but this one lacked an edge, with little riding on the game and both teams missing regular faces.
Burnham were the more depleted and it showed - the visiting team, who won the toss and elcted to bat, being dismissed for 156 with only four balls of their allotted 45 overs remaining.
Jamie Hamilton (53), Andy Stephens (45) and the prolific Joel Whitaker (brilliantly caught by Jimmy Chapman at wide mid-wicket for 31) were the only Burnham batsmen who managed more than seven.
Hamilton and Stephens shared in a fluent fifth-wicket stand of 59 but, after reaching a promising 133 for four, Sports stumbled. Robbie Dennis (three for 40) was the pick of the Tillingham attack on a low, slow wicket, with medium pacers Tom Ford (9-4-23-1) and Andy Mee (8-2-18-1) both bowling economically.
Tillingham’s opening batsmen needed a bit of good fortune early on but Rob Ashworth was in typically determined mood. The left-hander finished undefeated on 74 and was in complete control by the close of the innings.
Alex Warren hit a breezy 46, with Chapman (20 not out) being on hand to hit the winning runs.
Ali Allchin (11-1-37-2) was the pick of the Burnham attack, which included Fuad Ahmed. The youngster, brother of Essex fast bowler Jahid, was making his 1st XI debut at the tender age of 13 and sent down four tidy overs. He would have had have Phil Hurst caught at short mid-off, too, but for a clumsy bit of fielding.
