Match report Burnham Sports breathed a sigh of relief after belatedly winning their first T.Rippon Mid-Essex League first division match of the season at the expense of Herongate at Millfield.
Victory was never in much doubt, either, as Sports, chasing 132 to win, cruised to a seven-wicket success with almost 24 overs to spare.
Herongate progressed cautiously to 87 for one after 29 of their allotted 45 overs after choosing to bat but the visiting team, stripped of several regular faces this term and weaker than in previous years, slumped to 131 all out.
That total would have been even less had Burnham’s seven bowlers not combined to bowl 17 wides - the kind of tally that they would expect to send down in half a season.
Jalal Ahmed was among the culprits but, bowling with great variety, was good value for his final figures of 8.2-3-18-3 . Andy Stephens (10-4-16-2), Jamie Hamilton (6-1-18-2) and Joel Whittaker (5-1-20-2) also got among the wickets, with Robin Whitaker contributing a run out.
In reply, Burnham wasted little time putting Herongate out of their misery. David Bridge (16) and Joel Whittaker (31) put on 48 for the opening wicket inside nine overs before Hamilton (48 mot out), Jalal (10) and Grant Smith (13 not out) finished things off.
Sports were able to toast victory by 6pm.
