Burnham Sports CC 1st XI v Ingatestone on Sat 15 Aug 2009 at 1.30
Burnham Sports CC Won By 8 Wickets
Match report
Jubilant Burnham Sports are back on course for promotion after an emphatic eight-wicket win over Ingatestone at Millfield.
Victory, coupled with Chignal suffering a surprise defeat against Writtle, means that Sports will almost certainly be playing in the T.Rippon Mid-Essex League Premier Division next summer provided that they win their final two matches.
The first of those fixtures is away to Galleywood, who have already been relegated, this Saturday and Burnham are likely to be unchanged for the sixth week in succession provided Andy Stephens shakes off a knee injury. Their last game could be a classic at home to Old Chelmsfordians, who are also battling hard to go up.
Jamie Hamilton, skipper of Sports, told the Standard: “Our destiny is pretty much back in our own hands and all the guys are up for the challenge ahead. We’ve worked really hard to get in this position and our reward is in sight.
“Inevitably, some people already have one eye on our finale against Old Chelmsfordians but lets get Galleywood out of the way first. It’s a potential banana skin because they are already down and are likely to throw caution to the wind.
“We’ve got to stay focused because a slip now would be hard to take.”
Sports never looked like fluffing their lines against an Ingatestone side who had lost just one of their previous nine fixtures.
Put into bat, Ingatestone progressed to 55 for one before Andy Stephens (12-4-29-4) and Karl Barnes (10-1-30-2) combined to reduce them to 115 for eight.
The visiting team were eventually all out for 156 but Sports, despite a string of dropped catches, had the initiative and wasted little time tightening their grip after tea.
Paul Green (21) and Grant Smith put on 43 for the first wicket before Smith (45) and Jalal Ahmed added another 53 for the second.
Ahmed (65 not out) and Hamilton (23 not out) then teamed up to end the game in rapid fashion - the pair bashing the final 54 required off the last five overs. In all, 126 of Burnham’s 158 runs were either fours or sixes. They won with 22 overs to spare.
