Burnham Sports CC 1st XI v Broomfield on Sat 16 May 2009 at 1.30
Burnham Sports CC Won By 4 Wickets
Match report
Teenager Ali Allchin shone with bat and ball as Burnham Sports beat Broomfield by four wickets at Millfield.
The T.Rippon Mid-Essex League first division fixture was played in gusts of more than 30mph but Allchin made light of the extreme conditions with a breezy all-round effort that promised plenty for the warmer months ahead.
Allchin claimed four for 32 to help limit to Broomfield to 171 for nine from their allotted 45 overs and then thumped 59 as his team swept home with more than 13 overs to spare.
Sports had begun the season with two narrow defeats and must have feared the worst as Broomfield, put into bat, reached 109 without loss with 16 overs to, quite literally, throw caution to the wind.
It was Burnham who took flight, though, after Fuad Ahmed bowled the restrained Cowell for 38. His dismissal seemed to distract Chambers, who was crazily run out by the length of the pitch in the next over for 64.
Allchin was swiftly introduced back into the attack once the openers had departed and his response was to take four for 13 from his second speedy six-over burst. Jamie Hamilton (two for seven) and Robin Whittaker also took wickets near the finish as the visiting team crumbled. Whittaker also held on to a fine catch at square leg to dismiss the dangerous Mishra.
A target of 172 on a fast-drying pitch against an ordinary attack should have been plain sailing for Sports but the alarm bells were ringing after they slid to 57 for four.
Allchin and Jalal Ahmed steadied a few nerves with a stand of 39 before Allchin and Neil Saunders combined to add another 51.
The dismissal of Allchin, who hit five towering sixes, gave Broomfield new hope but Saunders and Andy Stephens steered their side to success without further loss. Saunders, who ended unbeaten on 30, finished things off with a hooked six over square leg.
