Burnham Sports CC 1st XI v Writtle on Sat 02 May 2009 at 1.30
Burnham Sports CC Lost By 16 Runs
Match report
Clumsy Burnham Sports were left to reflect on what might have been after losing their opening league encounter of the season by 16 runs to Writtle.
Sports, chasing 238 to win, were bowled out for 221 with eight balls left but the match had, quite literally, slipped through their fingers much earlier on.
A string of dropped catches, compounded by some sloppy out fielding, meant that Writtle accumulated 237 for eight from their allotted 45 overs.
They would not have got anywhere near that score had the forceful Pravjat Dias, coming into bat with his team in trouble at 19 for two, not been dropped first ball. He was given two more lives in the infancy of his innings and, after also surviving a big shout for leg before wicket, went on to make a match-winning score of 83.
Writtle were also indebted to the seventh-wicket pair of Harris and Marsh, who both made 37 in swift time.
Andy Stephens (12-4-33-2) was the pick of the Burnham attack, with Dias being twice dropped off his bowling. The energetic Ali Allchin (12-1-58-2) was the only other Burnham bowler to take more than one wicket.
Sports regained the initiative after tea through Paul Green, Joel Whittaker (34) and skipper Jamie Hamilton (41). Indeed, at 122-1 in the 24th over with Green and Hamilton together, it seemed the bungles in the first half of the match would be an irrelevance.
Williamson, a slow left-arm bowler, changed the course of the game by dismissing Hamlton, Allchin and Stephens in swift succession. Green and Grant Smith, hampered by a hamstring problem, took the score to 172 without further loss before the former succumbed to all-rounder Dias for 54.
Smith, who ended unbeaten on 54, did his best to keep his team in the hunt but, one by one, his lower-order colleagues departed - Karl Barnes being last man out swinging across the line. Smith ended unbeaten on 54.
