SECONDS CAUGHT OUT ON GREEN MONSTER

31 Aug 2010

On the most greenest dampest wicket I have ever witnessed in the league(almost as bad as Highwoods hospital got their flymo out 20 min before the start of the match and proceeded to cut the wicket)an embarrassed Danbury apparently have 2 different contractors County Council and Parish Council to cut the outfield and to cut the wicket only on a Tuesday ( they didn't turn up - due to weather) as they tried to explain to me, the winning of the toss was the most crucial event of the day....it wasn't to be as Danbury won the toss and  unsupprisingly inserted the Seconds and mayhem ensured.
With the ball sticking in the pitch and flying off a good length it was soon 1-1,then 2-2,8-3,16-4,20-5,23-6 and 26-7, with many of the batsmen being caught playing too early it was then left to G Kilduff (24) and D May (16no) to provide any resistance with the bat, with an 8th wicket stand of 44, and providing a measly total of 71.
Knowing their target was only 71 (the advantage of batting second) the home team could take some risks and clatter some quick runs as they rode their luck  to only lose 2 wickets and win by 8 as the pitch continued to dry out.
It was a disappointing end to the Season but we should take heart that winning 10 matches was a vast improvement on last year and still be in the promotion chase to the last but one match of the season, gave a great competition edge to each match and plenty to look forward to next year and hats off to Neil Saunders for being Captain this year as I can tell you it's no easy job, well done mate.
