FIRSTS FALL AT FINAL HURDLE (AGAIN)

29 Aug 2010

Burnham Sports suffered heartache on the final day of the season for the second successive year when losing to Chignal at Millfields.
Sports went into the game knowing that they needed to match, or better, the points haul of Rayleigh to be guaranteed promotion to the T.Rippon Mid-Essex League Premier Division.
But Jamie Hamilton's men crashed to 75 all out chasing 183 to win against a Chignal side who finished the campaign as champions. Rayleigh, meanwhile, were beating Bentley to grab the second promotion place.
"It was really disappointing to again get so close and yet so far but hopefully 2011 will be third time lucky for us," Hamilton said. "Our batting has let us down on occasions this year and that's what happened again on Saturday.
"But, in truth, we did well to get into the promotion hunt because we were third bottom a couple of months ago after not doing ourselves justice in the first half of the season. Our seven successive wins going into the Chignal game shows what we are capable of and that's what we've got to take forward to next year."
Sports held the early initiative - winning the toss and restricting Chignal to 52 for two after 21 overs.
However, they spilled catches that would have removed the dangerous Faz Rahman and the hard-hitting all-rounder took advantage - smashing seven sixes and as many fours in a match-winning innings of 94.
Andy Stephens (12-4-21-3) eventually disturbed his stumps on his way to claiming a triple wicket maiden (all bowled) but the visiting team closed on 182 for six. It was a competitive tally given that conditions were favouring the bowlers and that the outfield was slow.
Sports reached 19 for loss in reply before the brisk Tom Bird (four for 28) removed Grant Smith, who tops Burnham's batting averages this year.
His dismissal was quickly followed by that of Jalal Ahmed, who was adjudged leg before, and Joel Whittaker, run out after a misfield at square leg.
Sports never recovered from those setbacks and Rahman (four for two) finished what he had started by claiming a hat-trick to wrap things up. His victims included the battling Hamilton, who topscored with 21.
Meanwhile, Burnham's 2nd XI signed off their season with a below-par display away to Danbury, who needed to win to avoid relegation.
Sports were bundled out for 72, with only Graeme Kilduff and David May offering any resistance. Danbury wasted no time zooming past that inadequate tally and won by eight wickets.
This Sunday, Sports play St Aidans (start 1pm) in a friendly. It is their final home match of the year.
