  • Nobody has been playing for the cricket club longer than Ed. He's been with us since 1970s, when I recall him striding to the crease on a weekly basis with his wide-collared shirt unbuttoned almost down to the midrift. It was all the rage those days. Just like that snug armchair that sits in the corner of your house, you cannot imagine life without him. Not that he's anywhere near finished yet. He's preserved himself (especially that moustache, which he's had since the age of 8) fantastically - avoiding long-term relationships despite his dashing looks and immense strength. Children have not drained him, either, and wisely, he's never been one to flog himself bowling. The icing on the cake is that, when batting, he doesn't exhaust himself running, with his shots either disappearing for 4 or 6. Ed has never worn a helmet (what real man would do that?) and can be regarded as a revolutionary because his approach means that he's been playing Twenty20 his whole life - it's just taken cricket some three decades to catch him up. Over the years various captains have tried to hone his no-nonsense approach. "Just play yourself in a bit, Eddie, wait until you've got 20 before playing your shots and don't always try and smack that yorker out of the ground." But it's always to no avail. They may as well be asking him to stop drinking bitter out of jugs. Ed has always let his actions speak louder than his words. This was also evident back in the 1970s when he appeared in a string of cricket-based adult movies. "Suck My Bails", "Ride My Middle Stump" and "69 not out" were not to everybody's taste (and the last-named got repetitive), but they did help Ed buy several of his beloved 4lb bats. Here's to the next 20 years and possibly a belated sequel to the steamy "Box of Delights".
