It does not pay to turn up and watch Burnham play cricket on a regular basis. Inevitably, the day will come when we are one short going into the game or reduced in number during it. Eyes will be cast around for saviours, as Dennis found to his cost in 2011. One minute watching his boys – Tom and Jack – in action, the next joining them on the field of battle. And, of course, once swept into our net, there is no escape. Silvester Senior became a regular player late on in the campaign – even playing both days on some occasions! His metamorphose from spectator to player was complete when he got called up for the 1^st XI on one occasion, being at mid-off when Jack (also making his 1^st team debut that day) grabbed a wicket. A proud day. He followed that by playing a pivotal role in the Over 40s beating the Under 40s. Let’s hope we see more of Dennis in action in 2012. There’s definitely scope in his bowling (nobody else at the club bowls quite so slowly) and anybody who can convince their wife to turn up and gladly score all day clearly has great powers of persuasion.
