Match report Burnham Sports produced another solid bowling performance on Saturday as they beat Woodham Mortimer by 35 runs.
Sports lost the toss and were asked to bat first on a damp wicket. Despite the difficult conditions opener Paul Green (30) and number three Chris Laird (48) shared a 62-run partnership and it looked like Burnham were on course to a large first innings total. They reached 151-3 after 31 overs with little difficulty, as the Woodham bowlers were guilty of bowling too short on the slow pitch.
However, a rapid collapse ensued as Sports’ middle and lower order fell foul of rash shots, gifting six catches to Mortimer. Pateman (5.5-1-37-3) and Ratna (10-2-42-4) did the damage as Burnham were dismissed for 182, losing their final 7 wickets for just 31 runs, Rob Layzell contributing 20 of those.
Burnham knew they would have to dismiss Woodham batsman Dan Smith early on in the second innings to stand a chance of winning the game. The in-form opener made 39 before being caught on the boundary by Dominic Whittaker off the bowling of Andy Stephens. Stephens went on to claim a second wicket after Matthew Mears and Robin Whittaker had both taken early wickets to leave Woodham 51-4 off 19 overs, well behind the required run rate.
Jack Shipton (34) steadied the innings for Woodham and rode his luck having been dropped before being bowled by spinner Tom Silvester, who claimed two wickets in two balls to all but seal victory. David Bridge bowled excellently again, conceding just 27 runs from his 10 overs and claiming a wicket in the process.
Sports couldn’t get the final two wickets but Woodham fell short as they finished their 45 overs on 147-8, sealing a comfortable 35-run win for Burnham. The 1st XI remain 4th in T-Rippon Division Two after winning 5 out of 6 of their opening games. Next week they face 3rd place side Basildon and Pitsea at home.
