Woodham Mortimer 2nd v Burnham Sports CC 2nd XI on Sat 06 Aug 2016 at 1pm
Burnham Sports CC Lost by 6 Wickets
Match report
Despite a century from captain Jack Shipton, Burnham Sports 2nd XI were unable to overcome Woodham Mortimer and maintain their push for promotion out of T-Rippon Division 8.
Shipton, who two weeks ago scored 131 against Willow Herbs, repeated the feat on Saturday as he smashed 17 boundaries on his way to a total of 104. Shipton’s efforts, along with valuable contributions from Ed King (21), David May (23) and Oscar Voller (26), helped push Sports on to a competitive total of 209 for eight after 45 overs.
On his century, Shipton commented, “It’s a special moment for anyone to score a century but to score two in one season is an unbelievable feeling.”
However, it didn’t go to plan for Sports in the second innings, as the hosts managed to force their way to victory. Half centuries from Woodham Mortimer openers Brown (62) and Fannon (55) set the home side up perfectly for the victory with a hundred partnership.
After they were dismissed by Shipton and Roger Perrin, valuable contributions from Smith (29), Hayman (26) and Harness (22 not out) saw Woodham Mortimer over the line in the 38th over, and they finished on 212 for four and won by six wickets.
Captain Shipton said after the game, “It’s so disappointing that we lost that game. I felt that we posted a pretty good score to defend – maybe an extra 20 would have made it more interesting – but credit must go to their batsmen who took the game away from us.”
Next week the second team host rivals Tillingham at Millfields. Tillingham sit just above Sports in the table in fourth position, but the chance to gain promotion has all-but slipped away for Burnham. Local pride is still at stake though, and it promises to be an exciting game.
