Burnham Sports CC 1st XI v Goresbrook 1's on Sat 23 Aug 2014 at 1.00
Burnham Sports CC Lost By 66 Runs
Match report
Another five-wicket haul by Robin Whittaker was not enough to prevent Burnham Sports sliding to a 66-run defeat in their title showdown with Goresbrook at Millfields.
Whittaker, who has been outstanding all season, claimed five for 37 as Goresbrook were restricted to 209 for nine in their T.Rippon Mid-Essex League first division fixture.
His victims included the most prolific batsman in the league, Kurt Whisker, who has scored almost 800 runs this summer despite playing in four rain-hit games. He had made only 16 when having his stumps disturbed by a peach of a ball that moved late.
Whittaker was also part-villain, though, as he overstepped the crease when bowling Michael Rooke shortly afterwards with a similarly excellent delivery that hit the top of off stump.
The no-ball verdict of Mick Elliott, the umpire, proved pivotal as Rooke, nicknamed Rat by his team-mates, went on to prove a real pest to the home side - holding his side’s batting together with an unbeaten 78.
Fuad Ahmed (two for 52) supported Whittaker but the rest of the home team’s bowling lacked penetration.
Burnham, who had won promotion the previous week, began well enough in reply - they were 31 for one after seven overs - but they were missing two key batsmen in Jamie Hamilton (injured) and Grant Smith (unavailable) and, in similar circumstances to the reverse fixture, were restricted by accurate bowling and athletic fielding.
Stand-in skipper Joel Whittaker did hit a fluent 34 but, unable to find the necessary acceleration, his team finished up with only 144 for nine.
Goresbrook now lead Burnham by 11 points at the top of the table and will be confirmed as champions provided they beat South Weald, who are bottom, in their final game on Saturday. Burnham must also win away to Rayleigh to have any chance of depriving them.
Hamilton, still on crutches after tearing a calf muscle last month, watched from the sidelines and said: “Full marks to Goresbrook - they have been the best team this season and would already be champions but for being involved in so many games spoilt by the elements.
“They are good in every department and I’m sure they will more than hold their own in the Premier League next year. Their oldest player on Saturday was something like 27 and they all bounce off each other.
“We know next season won’t be easy but we are also a relatively young side and can only get better. Everybody is looking forward to the challenges that lay ahead.”
Meanwhile, Burnham’s 2nd XI suffered a frustrating eight-wicket defeat in their penultimate Division 9 game away at Broomfield.
Batting first, they made a decent start but the loss of openers Steve Sims and Neil Saunders slowed their progress considerably.
Struggling against some good quality bowling from Need and the experienced Pyne (1-17 from 12 overs), they found the going hard work. David Bridge (20) and Ed King (29) were admirably patient but perished when trying to up the tempo.
David May (24) kept things moving late on, while Tim Lornie played some audacious shots but Burnham's total of 131 never looked like being enough, despite Brian Leech (0-26 from 12 overs) and Roger Perrin (2-29 from 12) bowling tightly.
Burnham’s 2nd XI close their campaign with a home game against Springfield 4th XI, who are anchored at the bottom of the table.
