Burnham Sports CC 1st XI v Little Baddow on Sat 25 May 2013 at 1.30
Burnham Sports CC Won by 7 wickets
Match report
Jamie Hamilton produced a mesmerising spell of spin bowling as Burnham Sports gained a superb seven-wicket win over Little Baddow at Millfields.
Hamilton, the skipper, was unplayable at times and was twice on a hat-trick as he finished with five for 33 from his allotted 12 overs.
It says much for the off-spinner’s sorcery that his victims, undone by a prodigious amount of turn, were either bowled or trapped leg before wicket - including dangerman Andy Harris, who made a battling 47.
Little Baddow ended up 119 all out, a tally that Burnham, despite being without such as Grant Smith, Paul Green and Rob Layzell, comfortably overhauled with around 14 overs to spare.
“The pitch was damp after lots of rain the previous day and the ball was turning a long way,” Hamilton said after his match-winning exploits. “I felt I’d bowled well in our previous matches without much reward but this time it was a different story.”
He added mischievously: “Perhaps I’ll have to sprinkle water on the pitch every Friday night.”
It wasn’t just a one-man show, though. Robin Whittaker, who has been a model of consistency for the past year, barely bowled a bad ball and claimed three for 23, while Adriaan Hugo (one fot 25), Joel Whittaker (one for 17) and Fuad Ahmed (seven overs for 17) also kept things tight.
In the field, Andy Stephens took a diving catch at second slip to dismiss Newton, from Australia, for nought off Robin’s bowling. He had scored 162 the previous week.
Sayeid Ahmed was out in the second over when Sports began their reply but Dominic Whittaker (40) and his older brother Joel Whittaker (28) then put on 58 to calm any fears.
Fittingly, Hamilton (27 not out) was at the wicket when the winning run was hit by Jack Silvester.
This Saturday, Sports travel to Herongate, a small ground where the club smashed a record 386 for three five years ago. They went on to win by 303 runs but expect a much tougher contest on this occasion.
