Great Waltham v Burnham Sports CC 1st XI on Sat 21 Jul 2012 at 1pm
Burnham Sports CC Won by 35 runs
Match report
Robin Whittaker continued his excellent form as Burnham Sports gained a hard-fought 36-run win away to Great Waltham.
Whittaker picked up four for 25 from his 12 allotted overs as Sports, defending a tally of 161, bowled the home side out for 125. In his past four games, the 20-year-old seamer has taken 14 wickets for just 107 runs.
Victory enabled Sports to jump back up to fourth in the T.Rippon Mid-Essex League first division and adds extra significance to their clash with third-placed Ingatestone at Millfields on Saturday. The top two clubs – who at pesent are Rayleigh and Stock – will be promoted at the start of September.
Burnham’s batting has been brittle on occasions this summer but nobody could quibble with the way they grafted after being put in on a wet, bowler-friendly pitch where boundaries were always going to be in short supply because of the slow outfield.
Paul Green (24) and Jack Silvester, celebrating his 16th birthday, put on 37 for the first wicket before falling in quick succession. Joel Whittaker (30) and Andy Stephens (27) built on their foundation before Tom Silvester (18), Neil Saunders and Dominic Whittaker scampered vital runs near the finish.
Sports finished with 161 for nine from their 45 overs, a creditable total given the challenging conditions. Mark Chapman, a 6ft 4in medium pacer, bowled impeccably and finished with figures of 12-7-15-1.
Burnham’s bowlers had not been taking notes – they had bowled six wides by early in the third over - but then clicked into gear and reduced the home side to 36 for five.
Ali Allchin made the initial breakthrough but it was Whittaker and John Reid, making his debut for the club, who really impressed.
Whittaker did not concede a run off the bat until his eighth over and had already dismissed Gary Bloom and Simon Harris by then. His figures would have been even more impressive had the dangerous Craig Swann not been dropped off his bowling in the infancy of his innings.
Reid had claimed two victims by the end of his third over and came close to adding to that haul on several occasions, with comical consequences given his exuberance.
Swann (40) threatened to make the most of his early life and Sports breathed a lot easier after he fended a gentle catch to gully.
Chapman (30 not out) went down fighting but Whittaker had the final word, grabbing the last wicket with the final ball of his spell.
Burnham’s 2nd XI had a lot less to cheer after suffering a nine-wicket drubbing at the hands of Woodham Mortimer.
Put into bat, Sports proved unable to cope with tricky conditions and subsided to 59 all out.
There were few redeeming features and, to make matters worse, Matthew Mears had to retire hurt after suffering an injury.
Mortimer breezed home for the loss of just one wicket, meaning the home side did not pick up a single point from the 26 available.
This Saturday, the 2nd XI travel to promotion-chasing Marconi.
On Sunday, Sports are scheduled to play a Warsop League game away to Great Waltham.
