Match report
SUPER SMITH TEES UP EMPHATIC SUCCESS
Grant Smith made up for bungling tea by hitting a superb 120 as Burnham Sports made it four wins in a row by beating Galleywood by 65 runs at Millfield.
Smith’s pre-match chores were nothing more strenuous than a bit of batting, catching and putting three loaves of garnished sandwiches in the fridge. He completed the first two without any problem but the last task proved beyond him as he accidentally put the food in an adjacent freezer.
The opening batsman’s error resulted, four hours later, in red-faced Sports offering the opposition frozen fare that was not for the dentally challenged.
Smith had shown an appetite for runs earlier and left neutrals more than satisfied. He never offered a chance and moved to three figures with the help of a six and 13 boundaries.
He shared in an opening stand of 47 with Sayied Ahmed (20) and then piled on 161 for the second wicket with Joel Whittaker (75). Whittaker felt that he was not at his best but still managed eight fours and a maximum.
Sports were 251 for two with seven overs left but, in the hunt for quick late runs, lost a flurry of late wickets to close on 293 for seven. Jamie Hamilton was unbeaten on 45 at the finish, having got to the wicket with little more than ten overs left.
Galleywood were always struggling to keep up with run-rate of more than six per over but an innings of 106 by Danny McIntyre, who had earlier taken four for 50, enabled them to reply with a respectable 228 for seven.
Hamilton and Whittaker shared four late wickets after Karl Barnes had conceded just 39 from his 12 allotted overs. Barnes was also unlucky to have McIntyre dropped relatively early on.
