  • A man who challenges convention on every level. He's one of the most intelligent human beings you will ever meet (he's got A-Levels in 5 languages for starters and could probably discuss peace terms with the martians when they get round to invading us)  yet can find no regular work. He has a wicked, dry sense of humour and can be wonderful company when in full flow, but, equally, has the capacity to behave irritationally and test the patience of even his most loyal friends. The contradictions go on and on for this enigma wrapped up as a riddle. Predictably, his prowess as a cricketer is not straightforward. Bowls right-handed, bats left-handed. Never been keen on fielding and usually does that no-handed. Rapidly quick in his prime and, if he wasn't trying to hurt batsman physically, would rip them apart mentally with observations about their technique or mother. Didn't enjoy facing fast bowling himself, but was an effective batsman who, like most lefties, was particularly good at slogging through the leg side. (Do What??? - Have you never seen my cover drive Stephens?) - His return to Burnham in 2010 naturally led to speculation that he may begin a new chapter in his career and he duly added colour to several Sunday games. Then, as quick as he came, he deserted us for Tillingham. He returned in 2012 and but word reaches me that he's back at Tillingham for 2013. If events follow a similar pattern he'll be back with Burnham in 2014.
