Burnham Sports CC 1st XI v Rainham 1st on Sat 01 Jul 2017 at 13:00
Burnham Sports CC Lost by 100 runs

Match report Burnham Sports’ slump continued with another defeat at home to Rainham in T-Rippon Division One, despite another spirited performance from the side.
The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first on a dry, sunny, day in Burnham, and got their innings off to a good start as openers Hothi (14) and B. Patel (35) shared a 42-run partnership for the opening wicket. The pair, however, were dismissed by David Bridge, who shone again for Sports as he went on the finish with four wickets, conceding just 38 runs from his 10 overs.
It was the fourth wicket partnership between Rainham’s Shallow (50) and S. Patel (43) that did the damage for Sports though – they shared a 70-run partnership that saw Rainham steadily climb to 130 by the 34th over – at which point Patel was finally dismissed by Paul Green.
Once this partnership was broken, Sports rallied and worked hard to keep Rainham’s run-rate down. Tom Silvester impressed with the ball in the latter stages of the innings, claiming three important wickets that ultimately helped keep Rainham’s final tally at a par-score of 202 for 9 after 45 overs.
“I was really pleased with our bowling and fielding today,” commented captain Joel Whittaker after the game. “We’ve really improved in recent weeks and we took 9 wickets against a top batting side. Our catching is also a lot better, 7 of our wickets were from catches, which is always pleasing to see.”
Chasing 202, Sports were held back at first by good bowling from Rainham’s O’Neill and D. Patel, who both claimed a wicket each. However, a mix of bad luck, good bowling and some contentious decisions all but ended Sports’ hopes of a first win in six games as Sports lost 5 wickets for just 50 runs in the middle part of the innings.
Rob Layzell offered lower order resistance for sports with an explosive 35, but only Joel Whittaker (10) and Jamie Hamilton (11) managed to reach double figures. Sports were bowled out for 102 in the 37th over.
The spin of B. Patel, who claimed 5 wickets for the away side, was too much to handle for Sports. T Bunn also claimed a couple of wickets for Rainham later in the innings.
Next weekend marks the start of the second half of the season as Sports travel to local rivals Tillingham, looking to kick their season back into gear.
Burnham’s second XI travelled to Rayleigh for their game this week. Rayleigh won the toss and put Burnham in to bat.
Grant Smith made a positive start by getting 36 but once he was dismissed it was the start of a massive collapse and they were all out by the 30th over for only 77 runs.
In reply Rayleigh chased it down easily by the 31st over with the loss of only one wicket, thanks to the bowling of Joe Green.
Next week the second XI host Galleywood at Millfields.
