Burnham Sports CC 1st XI v Writtle 1st on Sat 03 Jun 2017 at 13:00
Burnham Sports CC Lost by 8 wickets

Match report A half century from Tom Silvester could not save Burnham Sports 1st XI from a second successive league defeat at home against Writtle on Saturday in T-Rippon Division One.
Silvester (50), who shared a 96-run partnership with club veteran Neil Saunders (36), dragged Sports back from a precarious position in the second half of the Burnham innings.
After the dismissals of Whittaker brothers Robin (22) and club captain Joel (17), the batsmen came together with Sports reeling at 72 for 6.
The pair batted with great composure together to pull Sports back into the game, leading Sports to a final score of 169 after 45 overs.
This, however, was an under-par score on a good batting pitch, which is what ultimately cost Sports the chance of getting the victory.
“I’m obviously pleased personally to score a half century, but losing today is a tough one to take,” said Silvester after the game. “That partnership with Neil brought us back into it and it gave our bowlers something to defend. Ultimately, it wasn’t enough in the end which I’m disappointed about.”
For Writtle, Shinde dealt the damage to Sports, claiming 4 wickets and conceding just 25 runs from his 9 overs. Ryan claimed 2 wickets for Writtle, while Cook and Narayan chipped in with a wicket a piece for the visitors.
Defending a slender total of 169 was always going to be a challenge for Burnham’s bowlers, and this proved to be the case as Writtle wrapped up a comfortable eight wicket win in the 28th over.
Openers Waqas (70) and Stevens (52 not out) set up the win and Cook (30) took the visitors over the line.
Tom Silvester and David Bridge both claimed a wicket each, but these were mere consolation and did not halt Writtle’s momentum as they finished 173 for 2.
“We simply didn’t get enough runs today,” said captain Whittaker. “A par score would have been about 230, so we were around 60 runs short today of making a good game of it. Had we made that, they would have been under more pressure and we might have seen a different outcome.”
After the opening 5 fixtures, Sports have won two and lost three games, and currently sit in 8th position in Division One, one spot outside the relegation zone.
Next week, Sports travel to Great Totham who are currently sitting in 5th place.
Burnham’s second XI suffered a demoralising defeat away at Woodham Mortimer. Batting first, the team was bowled out for just 64, which Woodham chased down with ease in 17 overs for the loss of no wickets. The second XI still sit eighth in the T Rippon Division seven and will be hoping for better fortune next week when they host Boreham at Millfields.
