Match report Half-centuries from Captain Joel Whittaker and Jack Silvester inspired Burnham Sports 1st XI to a third consecutive win in their T-Rippon Division One game against Rainham on Saturday.
Opening batsman Silvester (60) set the tone early on for Sports playing with patience against some skilful bowling from the Rainham openers, whilst keeping the scoreboard moving along at a steady rate with quick running between the wickets.
Silvester and fellow opener Paul Green (35) managed to put on 96 for the first wicket partnership before the latter was run out after a superb piece of fielding from Rainham.
After Silvester was caught, Burnham lost two more quick wickets and looked in trouble, but then Joel Whittaker came to the crease and got in on the act with a far more explosive innings. He smashed seven boundaries on the way to his score of 50 before being bowled. David Bridge (22) and Jamie Hamilton (22) also chipped in to help Sports reach a final total of 233 for eight wickets after 45 overs.
Defending their total, Sports made the perfect start as Robin Whittaker claimed the early wicket of Rainham opener Hothi. However, S. Patel and J. O’Neill looked to have brought the visitors back into the game as Rainham flew past the 100-run mark.
Sports, though, made the breakthrough as Andy Stephens bowled O’Neill and then Patel was superbly stumped by Paul Green.
These two wickets in quick succession exposed the middle and lower order of Rainham and they had no answer to the best bowling attack in the division.
Tom Silvester (four for 39) did most of the damage for Sports; his spin caused trouble for the visitors’ batting line up. Robin Whittaker got the last two Rainham wickets and finished on three for 36. Rainham were eventually all out for 166 by the 37th over, ensuring Sports claimed an emphatic 67 run win.
