Burnham Sports CC 1st XI v Ingatestone 1st on Sat 14 May 2016 at 13:00
Burnham Sports CC Won BY 10 WICKETS
Match report
Two astonishing bowling displays from Whittaker brothers Joel and Robin inspired Burnham Sports to their first win of the season, as they demolished Ingatestone by 10 wickets in the second fixture of their T-Rippon Division One campaign at Millfields on Saturday.
In what was a first in Burnham's history, all 10 wickets were equally shared out between two brothers as both Robin and club captain Joel claimed 5 wicket hauls, tearing apart the Ingatestone batting line-up and bowling them out for just 86 runs in under 27 overs. The visitors simply had no answer to their pace and accuracy, their top scoring batsmen G Jeater and G Smith could only muster 14 runs each.
After the game, Joel commented, "It was just incredible, a great day personally and for Robin, who did a fantastic job of dismissing what is a very dangerous top order. Everything just seemed to go our way on the day. A huge amount of credit must go to the team though, we needed to bounce back after that heavy loss to Brookweald last week and we did that in emphatic style."
Set a low target of 86 runs to chase, victory seemed all-but inevitable. Only a catastrophic collapse from the Burnham batting order would put that in jeopardy. However, opening batsmen Paul Green (39 not out) and Jack Silvester (43 not out) showed composure to bring Sports home to their first win of the season. The latter finished off a comfortable victory in style, clearing the ropes with a huge 6 that took Burnham's final total to 89 for no loss after only 14 overs.
"It was an epic performance by the team," said Joel. "To win by 10 wickets at such an early stage of the season puts a big statement out. We need to kick on from this now and get on a run of victories."
Next week, the first team travel to Canvey Island.
