Brookweald 1st v Burnham Sports CC 1st XI on Sat 07 May 2016 at 13:00
Burnham Sports CC Lost by 122 runs

Match report Burnham Sports suffered a heavy 122 run defeat at the hands of big-hitting Brookweald on Saturday in their first fixture of the T-Rippon Division One season. The home side racked up a sizeable total of 285, which proved too much for Burnham to chase down. Sports were bowled out for 163 after 29 overs, despite the efforts of Jamie Hamilton, who smashed two sixes on his way to a top-score of 44.
Hamilton, who had earlier taken two wickets for Burnham, was fighting a losing battle for Sports. He came to the crease with 4 wickets gone and with just 38 runs on the board. However, alongside captain Joel Whittaker who ably supported him with a composed 27, he looked to have dragged Burnham back into the game. It was only when the pair were dismissed by Brookweald’s Mohammed that any hopes on an opening day win were dashed.
Earlier, on a sunny day in Brentwood, Burnham opted to bowl first after winning the toss. This decision looked to be the right one, as Burnham got off to a lightening start. Robin Whittaker took Sports' first wicket of the season in just the fifth over to leave Brookweald on 23 for 1. The home side settled down afterwards, with Mills (26) and Ahsan (29) putting together a 39 run partnership before the latter was caught off the bowling of Jack Silvester. From that point, the pressure was firmly back on Brookweald, and after 30 overs they looked in trouble. Two quick wickets from Tom Silvester left the home side reeling on 177 for 7. However, Hafiz Ahmed (54) and Irfan Yousaf (37) came to the crease and turned the game on its head. Brookweald were bowled out in the final over for 285.
In reply, Burnham got off to the worst possible start and lost early wickets at the hands of Yousaf and Happell. Hamilton and Whittaker then entered the fray and Burnham started to gain some momentum, but their efforts proved to be in vain as their dismissals triggered a lower order collapse. Only Dominic Whittaker offered late resistance as he scored a fluent 18 not out, but Sports were eventually all out for 163.
Next Saturday, Burnham host Ingatestone in their first home game of the season.
