Match report Meanwhile, Burnham Sports 2nd XI were heavily beaten by 9 wickets at the hands of Hatfield Peverel at Millfields. Peverel’s first team, which was in the premier division, has recently folded, so their second team contained premier division players, and it was always going to be a tall order for Sports playing against a strong line up. On the flip side, Sports were missing several regular players making the task even more difficult
After being sent in to bat, Sports got off to the worst possible start, losing 4 early wickets. However, Grant Smith and David May both scored 18 to raise hopes of a potential fight-back, but after they were dismissed by Westwood (5 for 18), the lower order collapsed. The Sports’ scorecard made grim reading, as they were bowled out for just 65.
Peverel wrapped up the game in comfortable fashion in reply, Phillips (39) and Dawson (24) seeing them home. On a high note, youngster Joe Green made an impression with the ball – he claimed a wicket in his 5 overs, showing his potential for the future.
Next week, the seconds travel to Orsett and Thurrock.
