Burnham Sports CC 1st XI v Bentley on Sat 08 Aug 2015 at 1pm
Burnham Sports CC Lost BY 3 WICKETS
Match report
Burnham’s fate in the T Rippon Premier Division looks all but sealed following defeat at home on Saturday to Bentley. Sports are yet to win a game since being promoted and with only three fixtures remaining lie bottom of the league. Despite being set for relegation the team gave a spirited bowling performance last weekend but could not defend a low total against the league leaders.
Batting first, the home side collapsed to 122 all out. Jack Silvester, who has been batting well at the top of the order recently, top scored with 42. However, only Joel Whittaker (26) and Nick Gosling (13) managed to reach double figures in support. The bowling of Doran (4-23), Coleman (3-17) and Clark (3-31) did the damage for the visitors, as they bowled out Sports in 37 overs.
Burnham showed a great deal of character when bowling in reply. Andy Stephens claimed a wicket with the third ball of the innings and was supported by Fuad Ahmed, who struck three overs later, to leave Bentley reeling on 19-2 after only four overs. Stephens’ swing bowling caused problems for the top order and he claimed a second wicket to finish with 2-31 after his eight overs. The spin bowling trio of James Hamilton, Tom Silvester and Paul Green picked up a wicket each at regular intervals in the innings, and offered a slim chance of victory. It was not to be though as the visitors crept past Burnham’s score thanks to 41 from G. Larkin and 31 from A. Parmenter.
After the game, Andy Stephens commented, “Victory never looked likely today after our batting performance, but at least our bowlers managed to respond against one of the league’s strongest sides. It’s a shame we didn’t have 40 or 50 more runs on the board which would have offered us a better chance of a win”.
Burnham go into this week’s fixture against Springfield, who are just behind Bentley at the top of the table, knowing they will have to do better than when Springfield played at Millfields in June. In the previous encounter Sports were thrashed by 10 wickets.
