Match report
Burnham Sports are going to have to pull off a Houdini act if they are to avoid relegation from the T Rippon Mid-Essex League Premier Division.
Sorry Sports have reached the halfway stage of the season without managing to chalk up a single success. However, with Little Baddow, High Roding and Hatfield Peverel also struggling for any kind of momentum, survival remains a possibility.
This Saturday, Jamie Hamilton’s men, adrift at the bottom of the table, entertain Great Baddow, hoping to avenge a narrow defeat in the reverse fixture.
“Being realistic, we’ve got it all to do if we are to stay up,” Hamilton admitted. “I’d say we need at least three wins to have any chance of survival, probably four. We’ve got to beat all the teams around us and we didn’t manage to get the better of any of them in the first half of the season.
“On the plus side, we continue to show spirit. We’ve managed to enjoy certain aspects and will stick at it.”
Last Saturday, Sports played Old Chelmsfordians, the league leaders, and were left to reflect on a 126-run defeat.
The Old Boys smashed 324 for eight from their 45 overs - the highest total any team has ever accumulated against Burnham, who replied by making 198 all out.
It was the third time this season that the Old Boys have scored in excess of 300 and, for a time, on a blameless pitch, they threatened to score in the region of 380.
Having reached 238 for two after 30 overs, such a tally looked a possibility but Tom Silvester and Jack Silvester, his younger brother, managed to slow some of their progress.
Chris Meer, from South Africa, made a polished 103 that included 16 fours and two sixes, but the real fireworks were provided by the prolific Faz Rehman, who raced to his half-century off just 26 balls.
He was on course for a deserved century before being caught behind for 96, being undone by a ball from Tom Silvester that bounced and turned. He trudged back to the pavilion, having hit eight fours and seven sixes.
In all, the visiting team cleared the boundary on 11 occasions, losing several balls in the process. Burnham’s battered bowlers avoided eye contact with the scorebook afterwards, but the Silvester brothers shared four wickets and Robin Whittaker (two for 45 from ten overs) also emerged with credit.
Sports gave the Old Boys some of their own medicine after tea, opening batsmen Paul Green and Jack Silvester (both 23) putting on 51 in in less than six overs.
However, both fell after getting started, which proved a pattern for the rest for the rest of the innings. David Bridge and Tom Silvester also managed 23, with four other players getting into double figures.
Joe Grant, the former Essex and Jamaica fast bowler, came on first change and, despite being dubbed “Grandad” by his team-mates, took three for 41 from his allotted 10 overs. In physique, he has changed little since his days as a professional.
Rehman, never one to stay out of the action for long, took three for 27 with his off-spin.
Meanwhile, Burnham’s 2nd XI kept up their good recent form, David May providing the inspiration as they won by six wickets away to Southend Trojans.
All-rounder May took the first six Trojan wickets to tumble as the home side, who won the toss and chose to bat, slipped to 151 all out, squandering more than nine overs.
May finished with personal best figures of 9-0-37-6 but could not budge Wiggins, who finished 69 not out.
In reply, Burnham eased home with few alarms and, barring wet weather, would almost certainly have won their past five games. Nick Gosling made 39 before Ed King (41 not out) and man of the match May (32 not out) finished the job off.
The evergreen King is averaging more than 36 this term.
This Saturday, Sports travel to their Goresbrook counterparts.
