Bentley v Burnham Sports CC 1st XI on Sat 19 Jul 2014 at 1.30
Burnham Sports CC Won By 55 Runs

Match report Fuad Ahmed is in glittering form ahead of Burnham Sports’ biggest match of the season at home to Rettendon (start 1.30pm) on Saturday.

Ahmed smashed 91 in the defeat of Bentley last weekend, having top-scored with 42 in the victory over Great Totham the previous weekend.

His exploits are all the more remarkable given that he is observing Ramadan, which means that he has been fasting for several weeks.
“It’s great that Fuad feels able to carry on playing,” Jamie Hamilton, the Burnham captain said. “I’m not sure how many of us would be able to go through the day without anything to eat or drink - let alone play so well. You had to admire him on Saturday, when it was so humid and the rest of us were gulping down refreshments.

“He took the Bentley bowling apart and also batted well at Totham the previous week, when conditions made batting very tricky.”

Successive wins have helped Sports climb back to joint-top of the T.Rippon Mid-Essex League first division with Goresbrook, who they have a game in hand of.

Burnham could take another massive step towards promotion if they beat Rettendon, who a third in the table, on Saturday.

They will have to cope without Sayeid Ahmed and Paul Green, plus, possibly, Andy Stephens, who is nursing a hamstring problem. However, their squad has been boosted by Nick Gosling, a batsman, joining from Rayleigh.

“Nick wasn’t enjoying his cricket at Rayleigh and is a very handy recruit for us,” Hamilton said. “He settled straight in over at Bentley and I’m sure he will do well for us.”

Hamilton was in destructive form himself at Bentley, thumping an unbeaten 72 that included 10 fours and two sixes. Ahmed also peppered the boundary, hitting 15 fours and a six.

In a match reduced to 30 overs per side by heavy overnight rain, Sports rattled up 224 for five.

Chasing more than seven runs per over was always going to be a big ask for Bentley, who ended up being bowled out for 169 in the 29th over.

Spinner Tom Silvester was delighted to grab personal best figures of five for 42, with Robin Whittaker, Ali Allchin and Hamilton sharing the other wickets.

Meanwhile, Burnham’s 2nd XI were thumping division nine promotion chasers Wickham by eight wickets, despite only fielding ten men.

Stephens (8-3-15-3) and Roger Perrin (10-1-25-1) gave Burnham instant control before Greg Campion (three for 37) and Jack Silvester (two for 23) got in on the act. Another feature was promising 13-year-old Leroy Sande, playing his second game for the club, taking two composed catches at mid-on.

A target of 120 proved no bother for Burnham, with Neil Wade’s belligerent 56 including five straight sixes and four fours. Steve Sims, who was a little more restrained, ended unbeaten on 28.

This Saturday, Burnham’s 2nd XI play away to Tillingham. The match will be played at Bradwell owing to Tillingham’s ground being used for the annual Flower Show.
