Burnham Sports CC 1st XI v Thurrock on Sat 29 Jun 2013 at 1.30
Burnham Sports CC Lost by 82 runs

Match report A battling all-round display by Jamie Hamilton could not prevent Burnham Sports suffering an 82-run defeat at home to Thurrock.
Hamilton took four for 42 and then top-scored with 35 in the T.Rippon Mid-Essex League first division fixture, but the captain’s efforts merely delayed Grays-based Thurrock beating Sports heavily for the second time this season.
Burnham were missing their leading batsman and top bowler of this season - Grant Smith and Robin Whittaker respectively - but began brightly, reducing Thurrock to 38 for three in the 18th over. Hamilton dismissed the top three in the order, with Fuad Ahmed bowling tidily at the other end.
The visiting side reached 100 without further loss but then slipped to 122 for six, only to recover again and eventually be all out for 203 from 45 overs.
David Bridge (three for 45) backed up Hamilton’s efforts on a pitch responsive to spin, with Ahmed and Joel Whittaker also claiming a wicket each.
Any victory hopes that Burnham had quickly evaporated after tea, though, as they slumped to 25 for five, with only Hamilton able to resist a speedy attack.
When his eighth man out, with the score on 84, it seemed his team would not even muster three figures but Ahmed (33) offered late resistance and shared in a last-wicket stand of 28 with Neil Saunders. It was Burnham’s highest partnership, but too little too late.
“Thurrock are a quality side and we were missing some key personnel,” Saunders said. “The past few weeks have not been great for us but we’ll pick ourselves up and go again.”
At the halfway stage in the season, Burnham are just one place off the bottom of the table and facing a scrap to avoid relegation. They trail Ingatestone, the club immediately above them, by 21 points and cannot afford that gap to grow any wider.
This Saturday, they entertain fourth-placed Gt Totham (start 1.30pm).
Burnham’s 2nd XI were seeking a fourth successive victory in division eight but were put firmly in their place by Stock 3rd.
Put into bat on a difficult pitch, Sports struggled to 114 all out in their 45 overs, with none of their batsmen able to master an accurate attack.
Stock then took advantage of several dropped catches and eased home for the loss of only two wickets, which were claimed by Roger Perrin and Greg Campion.
This weekend, they play away to East Hanningfield & Great Burstead, who have won just one game all campaign and are bottom of the league.
On Sunday, Sports had a Warsop League fixture at home to Tillingham and won by 110 runs.
Burnham accumulated 184, with Joel Whittaker (59), Fuad Ahmed (28) and Dominic Whittaker (24) being their top scorers.
A youthful Tillingham side were then dismissed for 74. Opening bowlers Joel Whittaker (three for 15) and Tom Stephens (two for 25) did the early damage before Jack Silvester claimed four for 15 from three eventful overs.
This Sunday, Burnham make the short journey to Rayleigh for another league encounter.
