Burnham Sports CC Sunday XI v Essex Carriers on Sun 15 Jul 2012 at 2pm
Burnham Sports CC Lost by 3 wickets
Match report
Burnham Sports continue their rain-ravaged season with contrasting matches this Saturday.
The club's 1st XI visit struggling Great Waltham, bottom of the T.Rippon Mid-Essex League first division, having not won a game this season. Meanwhile, Burnham's 2nd XI entertain their Woodham Mortimer counmterparts, who are firmly in the division eight promotion picture.
Last Saturday, the club's players were again left twiddling their thumbs as their respective matches were both washed out.
The 1st XI should have been at home to Little Waltham, while the 2's were scheduled to visit Ekco Monarchs.
Heavy rain washed out the entire league programme. Not one ball was possible in any of the dozen divisions, which is extremely rare - especially in mid-July.
The elements have claimed ten Burnham fixtures since the spring. Usually, the club have to abandon only one or two matches per season and there have been occasions when all games have been possible.
"None of the us have ever known anything like it," Andy Stephens, skipper of the 1st XI, said. "It's been a rotten summer and the long-term forecast is not encouraging any of us to dash out and buy any suntan cream anytime soon."
Sports had a surplus of players last weekend but, this Saturday, are badly depleted. The Ahmed brothers - Jalal, Sayeid and Fuad - will all be observing Ramadan, while a number of other regulars will also be unavailable.
The club's Warsop Sunday League game at home to Essex Carriers last weekend did survive, but only after a mass clear-up operation in the morning.
Removing endless buckets of water from the outfield was not rewarded, Carriers edging home by three wickets in a low-scoring battle.
Put into bat, Burnham made 107, paying the price for offering the visiting team too much catching practise.
Six Sports players got into double figures but none managed more than Sayeid, who got to 20 before succumbing.
Carriers then slipped fvrom 56 from two to 68 for six before recovering their nerve. Joel Whittaker continued his excellent season by taking three for ten from his eight allotted overs.
