Burnham Sports CC 1st XI v Great Waltham on Sat 10 Jul 2010 at 1.30pm
Burnham Sports CC Won by 6 wickets
Match report
There were some sparkling individual performances as both of Burnham Sports' Saturday league teams gained decisive victories in scorching heat.
The 1st XI bounced back to something like their best to beat Great Waltham by six wickets in their T Rippon Mid-Essex League first division clash at Millfield.
Andy Stephens (12-2-42-4) was instrumental in reducing Waltham to 148 for seven but the visiting team's Dave Clout was intent on having his own fun in the sun - smashing 104 not out off just 67 balls.
The well-named Clout, who had scored an undefeated century on his previous visit to Burnham, smashed nine sixes - the majority of them coming in a frantic final five overs that yielded 65 runs. That helped his side close on a respectable 233 for seven.
Sports could have been forgiven for having the wind knocked out of their sails, especially when Ali Allchin, promoted to opening the innings, was dismissed in the first over of his team's reply.
However, that setback was quickly forgotten as Grant Smith (23) and Joel Whittaker set about giving their side a platform.
Whittaker eventually departed for a fluent 61 and, after he had been dismissed, Jamie Hamilton (61 not out) and Paul Green (55) kept up the good work. Hamilton, the captain, mixed defence and attack with great skill. Green, meanwhile, after a luckless season, played with the kind of freedom that enabled him to average almost 50 last year.
The 1st XI, who won with two overs to spare, will now be hoping that they can find some consistency for the remainder of their campaign, starting this Saturday when they entertain Rayleigh (start 1.30pm) - who beat them by three runs in the reverse fixture.
