Match report Battling Burnham Sports suffered an agonising one-wicket defeat at the hands of Brookweald at Millfield.
The Mid-Essex League first division match was played in wet, windy and gloomy conditions but the teams contrived to set up a pulsating finale.
Chasing 154 to win, Brookweald looked like winning comfortably before slumping from 137 for five to 144 for nine. Young fast bowler Ali Allchin (four for 20) breathed new life into the game with a tremendous 11-ball burst that brought him three wickets for one. His victims included Taylor, who he bowled leg stump for 71.
With Karl Barnes grabbing a wicket in the interim, the visiting team suddenly found themselves needing ten to win with their last pair at the wicket. The nervy tail-enders survived some suicidal running and a big lbw shout to snatch the spoils with a dozen balls to spare.
Earlier, Andy Stephens (12-5-34-3) had dismissed Herongate’s first three batsmen during a lively spell, while wicket-keeper Dominic Whitaker took four catches.
During the first half of the game, Burnham had been indebted to sixth-wicket pair Jamie Hamilton (34) and David Bridge (31) after being reduced to 51 for five. Tail-enders Whittaker (17 not out), Barnes (15) and Stephens (14) also chipped in with valuable contributions.
