Chignal v Burnham Sports CC 1st XI on Sat 24 May 2008 at 1.30pm
Burnham Sports CC Lost By 37 Runs
Match report
A fluent half-century by Paul Green and some spirited lower-order batting could not prevent Burnham Sports sliding to a 37-run defeat away to Chignal Smealey.
Chasing 197 to win in the T.Rippon Mid-Essex League first division encounter, a depleted Sports side were dismissed for 159 in the penultimate over of their innings.
It means the 1st XI will go into their match at home to Herongate at Millfield on Saturday (start 1.30pm) still searching for their first success of the season.
Burnham were satisfied after winning the toss and restricting Chignal to 196 for seven from their allotted 45 overs. A par score at the ground is usually 220.
The home team looked well set at 82 for one after 20 overs but, from that solid start, struggled for acceleration as Joel Whitaker (8-2-26-2), Robin Whittaker (11-2-33-1) and Andy Stephens (12-4-28-0) stuck to their task. David Bridge, Jamie Hamilton and Brian Leech shared the other wickets to fall, but were a bit more expensive.
Jim Gibson (42) and Hector Bevitt-Smith (25) rode their luck to put on 77 for the second wicket before Jim Halls (36) and Simon Evans (31) weighed in with contributions.
Burnham were anxious for a solid start in reply but, with the exception of Green (51), who found the boundary nine times before nicking one behind, their top order flopped.
Green was fifth man out with the score on 77 and that soon became 88 for six when Stephens failed to negotiate a leg-stump yorker.
That left the visiting team with a mountain to climb but Neil Saunders and Dominic Whittaker restored some parity with a battling stand of 70.
The pair arrived at the final three overs needing 39 but, by now, were hitting the ball so well that Burnham still had an outside chance of getting out of jail.
However, Whittaker (35) was undone by the top-spin of Nigel Clarke (four for 28) and, within seven balls, Robin Whittaker, Leech and Mike Walsh had also had their stumps re-arranged. Saunders, nursing a badly damaged big toe and injured knee, was left undefeated on 27.
Burnham were left to reflect on what might have been with Dave Lucy, Grant Smith, Jalal Ahmed, Ali Allchin, Karl Barnes, Ed King, Karl Harris, Steve Sims and the Clark brothers among their missing personnel.
