Burnham Sports CC 1st XI v Chignal on Sat 11 Jul 2009 at 1.30
Burnham Sports CC Lost By 1 Wicket

Match report BURNHAM SUFFER LAST-BALL DESPAIR
Stunned Burnham Sports found that lightning can strike twice as they suffered another agonising defeat at the hands of Chignal at Millfield.
Sports lost by one wicket after conceding a leg bye off the final ball of the six-hour epic. Remarkably, they had lost the reverse fixture by a single run a couple of months earlier.
Those two losses have cost Sports 32 points and put a massive dent in their hopes of winning promotion from the T.Rippon Mid-Essex League first division.
Jamie Hamilton’s men were on good terms with themselves for much of the match - especially after winning the toss and reaching 182 for two in the 35th over of their innings.
With plenty of wickets in hand and Chignal flagging, a final tally of 250 plus seemed inevitable.
But Burnham fluffed their lines in the latter stages and had to settle for a final tally of 243 for six from their allotted 45 overs.
Opening batsmen Paul Green (60) and Jalal Ahmed (89) had given their side a fabulous platform but the only other bat to make an impact was Grant Smith, who made an unbeaten 29 despite suffering from a tummy bug.
Green got off the mark with a six and hit ten fours, while Jalal hit three maximums and a dozen fours.
Burnham initially kept up the good work after tea - limiting Chignal to 24 for one from their first ten overs. They would have been in an even better position had Rahman, batting at first wicket down, not been dropped third ball when on nought off the bowling of Robin Whittaker.
It proved a turning point because, after a cautious start, he bombarded the leg-side boundary with a rash of fours and sixes.
With 15 overs left, the tables had been well and truly turned with Rahman and Cant guiding the visiting team to 167 for one.
The dismissal of Matt Cant (44) unsettled Rahman, whose destructive innings of 111 came to an end shortly afterwards as he attempted another big hit off Hamilton.
Ahmed (28) and Ross Cant (21) picked up the baton from him and, with eight overs left, Chignal found themselves needing just 32 with six wickets in hand.
However, Burnham rallied and, with nerves also playing a part, Chignal arrived at the final over, bowled by Andy Stephens, still needing three for victory with two wickets let.
A two off the second ball through the off-side levelled the scores but a suicidal run out off the next meant the scores were level, with the last man facing. He did little more than keep out the next two deliveries and then, off the last, scrambled a run after the ball had hit him on the pads.

Burnham’s attempt to run him out were thwarted when the throw to the non-striker’s end hit him on the back.

The pick of the Burnham bowlers were 17-year-olds Whittaker (two for 39) and Ali All chin (one for 37 from 12)
