Mathew Mears profile

  • Mathew "Ray" Mears
  • (this penned by Matthew himself)
An utterly charmless oik or an affable, clownish, big kid. Always impossible to tell which one he'll be until the day dawns, which is usually several hours before he gets up. Could once bowl quite quickly, and bat with a degree of competence, but those days are long gone. Now bowls ropey "spin" off two paces and bats like a cross-eyed Karl Barnes. Time has not degraded his fielding, however - that would be impossible. Surely the worst fielder in the long history of the summer game. Plays for Burnham one season, Tillingham the next, and has been thrown out of more clubs than Monty Panesar. Like Paul Gascoigne, known to have serious refuelling issues, and again like Gazza, once spent a short time in Italy bringing England into disrepute. Good value in the post-match Queens Head debrief though, and not a man you'd want to challenge to a game of pool for cold hard cash.
